Community Grant Funding - How to Apply

Burley Parish Council sets aside a small budget each year to make small grants to local community organisations based in the village.

Grants are available up to £500, however, in order to allow more community organisations to benefit, the Parish Council has the discretion to approve a lower amount than the one applied for which would allow the money set aside to go a little further. In exceptional circumstances, the Parish Council may consider approving a grant of more than £500 and this is assessed on a case by case basis.

Menston Area Nature Reserve

East Wood (known locally as Weston Woods) is a small (nearly 20 acres) piece of mixed deciduous woodland. MANT have successfully purchased the woods for the community. This was achieved with the help of a number of local community and environmental groups.

MANT ran a crowdfunding campaign, which was hugely supported locally. However, in order to put in a successful bid they have taken a substantial loan from a philanthropist. Obviously, the sooner they can repay the loan, the better, as she would like to support other groups in a similar way. Burley Parish Council made a £500 contribution towards this cause which added to the contributions from Otley Town Council and Menston Parish Council.  The purchase of the woods will ensure that the woods will be open to the entire community to enjoy spending time in nature and for educational purposes. In addition, the improved biodiversity which will result from management to restore natural processes, and the increased carbon sequestration will benefit both people and fight against climate change.

Unique Project

Unique is a a self esteem and confidence course for young people in our community. This course has been running in Burley Woodhead school for 3 years and has also been delivered very successfully in an intense block after SATS in Burley Oaks.

Course facilitators work with boys and girls from years 5 and 6, and meet with them weekly to encourage them to talk about issues of Identity, Self esteem and confidence, dreams and ambitions, image, friendship, family etc.  Rather than offering any teaching, the leaders facilitate group discussion using a range of resources that are fun and engaging. Children gain ability to discuss who they are, and accept differences in each other. They also learn how to listen well, encourage others and be non judgemental. Staff, parents and pupils have praised the course at Burley Woodhead school. The plan is to remain in this school offering this course on a rolling basis as it has been so successful.

The course is written in two different ways to be age appropriate for delivery to both primary and secondary aged children. The long-term aim is to deliver the course much more widely within our community to respond to the ever growing issues in mental health that we can see our young people struggling with. The course could be run within our community youth group, or at the GP’s surgery or offer more sessions within schools. Unique have had interest from Ilkley Grammar School but have not been able to provide a course there due to lack of facilitators. The Parish Council was delighted to be able to contribute £500 towards training costs in order to expand the number of course facilitators which will enable the course to be expanded to more schools/locations.
