Duke of Edinburgh Award
Burley in Wharfedale Parish Council is proud to be a licensed provider for the Duke of Edinburgh Award for young people in Wharfedale.
We are currently enrolling for Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. Enrolment is open to all young people (aged 14+) living in all areas of the LS29 postcode.
If you need further information please email Lindsay at [email protected].
What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award?
It’s a life changing experience, a fun time with friends and an opportunity to discover new interests and talents. It’s a tool to develop essential life skills. A recognised
achievement respected by employers.
There are four sections to complete at Bronze and Silver level and five sections at Gold level.
Age for starting:
- Bronze 14 years old or 13 years and in Year 9 at school.
- Silver 15 years
- Gold 16 years
Any young person can do DofE regardless of ability, gender, background, or location. Achieving the award is not a competition and you have until your 25th birthday to
complete. It’s about setting personal challenges and pushing boundaries. Through the DofE programme young people make new friends, improve their self-esteem, and build confidence. They gain essential skills and attributes for work and life such as resilience, problem-solving, team working, communication and drive. This enhances CVs and University applications along with job applications.
We have a team of staff with a wealth of qualifications, experience, and knowledge.
- Lindsay Field – D of E Manager
- Russell Robinson – Senior leader
- John Popple – Leader
- Jonny Gaunt – Leader
- Simon Hill – Leader
- Steve Metcalfe – Leader
All staff and volunteers are DBS checked, first aid and safeguarding trained.

How does the Burley Parish Council scheme work?
The Parish Council are the licence holder for the charity.
We charge for expeditions and weekly sessions in order to cover the costs of staffing, insurance and kit.
We hold sponsored events during the year to help with building the DofE with new kit and up to date maps. Sponsored events are vital for the DofE to continue and grow.
We run weekly sessions on a fortnightly cycle for bronze and silver/gold. These sessions are training sessions for expeditions and team building.
We use Lower Wharfedale, Upper Wharfedale, North Yorkshire, Yorkshire Dales and North Wales for our expeditions.
